Product Safety & Compliance Policy
Last updated: August 5, 2026. Effective: August 5, 2026.
The Meow Picks is operated by Aesthi Technologies Inc. and sells exclusively within the United States. Every product on this site — whether sourced from an independent European studio or a U.S. maker — must meet or exceed applicable U.S. federal and state safety standards before it is listed. This policy applies to all three product categories we carry: Furniture, Technology, and Lifestyle. It sets out the material standards, testing obligations, and consumer protections that govern every item sold through themeowpicks.com, and is updated whenever our range, applicable laws, or testing standards change materially.
Chemical & material safety
Cats groom constantly, sleep directly on surfaces, and mouth objects out of instinct, so material safety is non-negotiable. We require the following across our range:
Formaldehyde — composite wood (TSCA Title VI / 40 CFR Subchapter R)
Cat trees, perches, beds, and scratchers that use composite wood (plywood, particleboard, MDF, hardwood plywood) must comply with TSCA Title VI formaldehyde emission limits — hardwood plywood at or below 0.05 ppm, MDF at or below 0.11 ppm, particleboard at or below 0.09 ppm. Maker documentation must confirm CARB Phase 2 or equivalent compliance.
Heavy metals — lead & cadmium (16 CFR §1303 / ASTM F963)
Painted, coated, or finished surfaces are evaluated against heavy-metal thresholds: lead in surface coatings must not exceed 90 ppm; cadmium and other metals are tested where finishes or glazes are present. Ceramic feeding bowls require heavy-metals migration testing consistent with FDA food-contact guidance.
Phthalates in soft plastics (CPSIA §108)
Soft vinyl, flexible tubing, and soft polymer accessories are evaluated against phthalate restrictions, applying the same diligence used for children's products given cats' grooming behavior. Makers supply third-party lab reports for soft PVC, TPE, or similar components.
Textile safety
Boucle, sisal, wool, cotton, sheepskin, and synthetic upholstery are evaluated for restricted azo dyes, colorfastness (so dyes do not transfer onto cats), accurate fiber-content labeling per the FTC Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, safe pH, and low residual formaldehyde in finishes.
Customers, regulators, or researchers may request safety test reports or material data sheets for any listed product by emailing hello@themeowpicks.com; we respond within five business days.
Mechanical & structural safety
Cats climb, scratch, leap from height, and apply full bodyweight to furniture repeatedly, so structural integrity is a safety matter. Structural furniture is evaluated for static load capacity (stated on the product page where the maker publishes it), stability against tip-over, sharp-edge and pinch-point risk, fastener security, and secure closures on carriers and enclosures. Products on this site are designed for domestic house cats and are not suitable for large exotic felids or cats above the stated weight threshold.
Flammability
Upholstered beds and enclosed sleeping units containing foam or padded filling are evaluated against 16 CFR §1500.44 and, where applicable, ASTM E1590. Flame-retardant treatments are disclosed where applied; we do not knowingly list products treated with halogenated flame retardants such as the PBDE class.
Electrical & electronic
Smart litter boxes, water fountains, and connected devices are assessed for UL/ETL/NRTL certification, FCC authorization (47 CFR Part 15), electrical cord and motor safety, appropriate water-ingress (IP) rating for wet components, and U.S. 120V AC operation. Full detail is in our Smart Tech & Electronics Compliance page.
Small parts & choking risk
Interactive toys, wearables, and play products are reviewed for detachable components; items with small parts carry supervised-use instructions, wand and cord toys are noted as supervised-play-only, and collar breakaway mechanisms are checked for release under tension consistent with feline safety guidance.
Assembly, use & supervision
Many products ship unassembled to reduce shipping damage. All furniture and wall-mounted systems must be assembled strictly per the maker's instructions before a cat uses them, and wall-mounted pieces must be fastened into studs or anchors rated for the combined weight of the product and cat. Improper assembly voids the maker's warranty and can create a hazard. If instructions are unclear, contact us before assembling.
All products are intended for domestic house cats. Interactive toys and any product with a small-parts notice require active supervision. No product sold here is a substitute for veterinary care. Inspect products regularly and retire any item showing structural weakness, fraying, sharp protrusions, or material breakdown. On delivery, inspect packaging and components, photograph any visible damage, and report missing components or transit damage within 3 calendar days of delivery; items arriving with structural or electrical damage must not be used.
Safety by category
Furniture
Cat trees, perches, shelf bridges, scratchers, beds, and cushions: composite wood meets TSCA formaldehyde limits; solid wood favors FSC or equivalent sourcing; powder-coated steel is tested for lead, chromium, and adhesion; sisal is natural and free of unsafe adhesives; upholstery meets the textile standards above; wall hardware is rated for the stated weight and freestanding trees are assessed for base stability with an anti-tip tether where the maker provides one.
Technology
Smart litter boxes, fountains, trackers, and heated beds: UL/ETL/NRTL status disclosed; FCC ID stated for wireless devices; submersible fountain pumps carry an appropriate IP rating; motor and sensor assemblies are enclosed; battery compartments are tool-secured; water-contact plastics disclose BPA-free/food-contact status.
Lifestyle
Bowls, litter, toys, carriers, collars, and accessories: feeding bowls meet FDA food-contact standards (21 CFR §177 for plastics, NSF 51 for stainless, migration testing for ceramics); natural clumping litter is low-dust with non-toxic clumping agents; toys disclose small parts; carriers provide adequate ventilation and load-rated frames; collars and harnesses use breakaway safety at appropriate tension and cadmium-free hardware.
Independent maker & partner standards
The Meow Picks is a retailer, not a manufacturer; every product originates from a third-party maker. Before listing, each maker warrants that its products comply with applicable CPSC rules (including CPSIA where relevant), that material compositions are as described, that composite wood meets TSCA Title VI limits, that electrical products hold applicable NRTL certification and FCC authorization, and that the maker will promptly notify us of any recall, regulatory notice, or material change. Maker and brand names on product pages belong to their owners and are used solely to identify the goods we sell, consistent with nominative fair use; no counterfeit or grey-market goods are knowingly sold. We monitor CPSC recall databases and maker communications, and in a recall we contact affected customers by email within five business days, communicate clear instructions, and cover return shipping for recalled items. Product descriptions accurately represent items as received; if you believe a description is inaccurate, contact us and we will investigate and correct within five business days.
U.S. regulatory framework
- Consumer Product Safety Act (15 U.S.C. §2051 et seq.): establishes the CPSC and its authority over safety standards, bans, and recalls; we apply CPSC guidance as our safety baseline.
- Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act: we apply CPSIA-aligned diligence to lead, phthalates, and testing wherever direct cat contact is foreseeable.
- Toxic Substances Control Act (Title VI): governs formaldehyde emissions from composite wood; any composite-wood furniture must meet its limits.
- FTC Act (15 U.S.C. §45) / 16 CFR Part 255: all product claims and certifications are truthful and substantiated; testimonials meet disclosure requirements.
- Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act: written manufacturer warranties are disclosed on the product page and honored through us.
- FTC Mail, Internet & Telephone Order Rule (16 CFR Part 435): orders ship within the timeframe stated at checkout, or we notify you and offer a full refund.
- FCC 47 CFR Part 15: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and RF devices hold FCC authorization; FCC ID stated for authorized devices.
- FDA 21 CFR: food-contact bowls, fountains, and components meet FDA food-contact material requirements.
Certain states apply stricter standards; California Proposition 65 warnings are included on product pages where the maker determines they are required, and state privacy rights are addressed in our Privacy Policy.
Your rights & reporting a concern
Every purchase carries protections under federal and state law independent of any policy we publish: accurate information (FTC Act), timely fulfillment (16 CFR Part 435), a safe product (CPSA), warranty enforcement (Magnuson-Moss), returns and refunds (see our Refund Policy), and data privacy (see our Privacy Policy). Items that arrive damaged, defective, or materially different are handled at no cost to you — contact us within 3 calendar days of delivery.
If you believe a product poses a safety risk, stop using it and contact us immediately at hello@themeowpicks.com (subject line "Safety Concern: [Order Number]") or +1 347-352-5552, with your order number, the product name, and photos where possible. We respond within one business day and escalate to the maker where a safety defect is confirmed. You also have the independent right to report a concern directly to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov or 1-800-638-2772, and to check recalls at cpsc.gov/recalls.
