This page explains, in plain language, every cookie category our store and its partners use, exactly what each one does, how long it stays on your device, and how to switch off anything beyond what keeps checkout working.

What is a cookie

A cookie is a small piece of text a website places in your browser so it can be recognized again, whether that means keeping items in your cart, remembering that you are logged in, or letting an analytics tool know a return visit came from the same device. Cookies cannot read files on your computer and cannot install anything on their own.

We group every cookie our store and its partners use into four categories, explained below: necessary, performance, marketing, and third-party affiliate tracking. Only the first is required for the site to function; the rest are yours to switch on or off.

Necessary cookies

These come from Shopify, the platform our store runs on, and keep the basic mechanics of shopping working. Without them, your cart would empty itself between pages and checkout could not process a payment securely. They cannot be switched off, because doing so would break the storefront itself.

Shopify session, cart and checkout security

Cookies such as cart, _shopify_s, _secure_session_id, and checkout_token keep track of what is in your cart, hold your session together as you browse, and protect the checkout process from fraud and tampering. Shopify also sets load-balancing cookies that route traffic to keep the site fast and stable during busy periods.

Performance and analytics cookies

These help us understand, in aggregate, how visitors use the site: which pages are read, which products get looked at, and where people run into trouble. We use Google Analytics and Shopify's own built-in analytics for this. Neither is used to build an advertising profile of you individually. These cookies are optional.

Google Analytics

Measures overall site traffic and behavior, such as which collections are visited most and how people move from a product page to checkout, so we can improve the site. Data is reported to us in aggregate form.

Shopify Analytics

Shopify's built-in analytics track store-level metrics like sessions, conversion rate, and returning-customer trends, using the same technical infrastructure as the cart cookies above, but for reporting rather than checkout function.

Marketing and advertising cookies

These are set by advertising platforms so that ads we run can reach people who have already shown interest in our products, and so we can measure whether those ads led to a purchase. They may also be used to show you a Meow Picks ad on another site after you visit ours. These cookies are entirely optional.

Google Ads and remarketing

Used to measure the performance of our Google Ads campaigns and, where enabled, to show relevant Meow Picks ads to past visitors as they browse elsewhere on the web.

Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram)

Helps us understand which visitors arriving from Facebook or Instagram go on to purchase, and lets us build custom audiences for future ad campaigns on those platforms.

TikTok and Pinterest tags

Where we run campaigns on TikTok or Pinterest, these tags measure ad performance in a similar way to the Meta Pixel above, for visitors who arrive from those platforms.

Shopify Audiences

Shopify's own advertising partner network, used to share anonymized, aggregated purchase signals with participating merchants so ads across the network reach more relevant shoppers.

Third-party affiliate tracking cookies

Where you arrive at our store by clicking a link from a content creator, comparison site, or coupon page, we may work with an affiliate network to record that referral, so the partner who sent you our way is credited for the sale. These cookies are set by the network, not by us directly, and they do not affect the price you pay.

Awin

Awin's tracking cookie records that a visit originated from an Awin-affiliated publisher, so a resulting purchase can be attributed correctly for commission.

Commission Junction (CJ)

CJ's cookie performs the same referral-attribution function for publishers in the CJ Affiliate network who have linked to our store.

ShareASale

ShareASale's cookie identifies the referring affiliate for visits arriving through its network, so commission can be attributed to the correct partner.

We do not currently run active campaigns on every network listed above at all times; this section is kept up to date to reflect which partnerships are active. If you clicked through from a specific creator or coupon site, its own cookie policy will also apply to that visit.

How long a cookie stays

A session cookie disappears the moment you close your browser. A persistent cookie stays on your device for a set period, listed below, or until you delete it yourself through your browser settings.

  • Necessary — cart (persistent): up to 14 days.
  • Necessary — _secure_session_id (session): clears when browser closes.
  • Necessary — checkout_token (session): clears when checkout completes or browser closes.
  • Performance — _ga (persistent): approximately 2 years.
  • Performance — _gid (persistent): 24 hours.
  • Performance — _shopify_y (persistent): approximately 1 year.
  • Marketing — _fbp (persistent): 90 days.
  • Marketing — _gcl_au (persistent): 90 days.
  • Marketing — _ttp (persistent): 13 months.
  • Affiliate tracking — network-dependent (Awin, CJ, ShareASale, persistent): typically 30 to 90 days, set by the network.

Exact durations are set by each third party and can change on their end without notice to us; the figures above reflect their standard published defaults.

Manage your cookie preferences

You can turn optional categories on or off through the preference controls in our store. Necessary cookies stay on, since the store cannot function without them. Your choice is saved in this browser; if you switch devices or clear your browser data, you will be asked again.

  • Necessary — cart, checkout, and security cookies required for the store to work.
  • Performance and analytics — Google Analytics and Shopify Analytics, used to understand site traffic in aggregate.
  • Marketing and advertising — Google Ads, Meta Pixel, TikTok, Pinterest, and Shopify Audiences.

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies at the device level, which applies to every site you visit, not just ours.

Additional opt-out tools include the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out, the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out, and Meta ad preferences.

Do Not Track, and how this policy changes

There is currently no single, industry-wide standard for how websites should respond to a browser's "Do Not Track" signal, so our site does not change its behavior based on that setting alone; the preference controls are the more reliable way to control optional cookies here. We may update this policy as our tools or partners change, and any update will be posted on this page with a new effective date.

Truthful disclosure

This policy accurately reflects the cookies and tracking technologies actually in use on this store, consistent with FTC guidance against deceptive practices (FTC Act, 15 U.S.C. §45).

Marketing consent, separately

Cookie consent here is separate from email marketing consent, which is opt-in and includes an unsubscribe link in every marketing email (CAN-SPAM Act).

California privacy rights

California residents may direct us to limit the use of cookies that constitute a "sale" or "share" of personal information under the CCPA/CPRA; see our Privacy Policy for the full process.

No cookie affects your price

None of the cookies described on this page change the price shown to you, the tax calculated at checkout, or your eligibility for a discount.
