Every product at The Meow Picks is sourced with care — from the material it is made of to the way a cat will actually live with it. This page tells you exactly how to set each category up safely, what to watch for, and when to call a vet. Read it before the first use.
General safety principles for everything we sell.
This page covers every product category carried by The Meow Picks. Sections are organized by category so you can read exactly what applies to the piece you have just ordered. All guidance here is additional to, and does not replace, the instructions supplied by the individual maker inside the box.
This page is for informational purposes only and does not constitute veterinary advice. Cats only
Every item on this site is designed, tested, and rated for domestic cats. Do not use any product from The Meow Picks with dogs, rabbits, birds, or other animals unless the individual product page explicitly states it is multi-species safe.
Indoor use unless stated
All furniture, technology, and most lifestyle products carried here are rated for indoor residential use only. Do not expose them to outdoor weather, moisture beyond the maker's stated guidance, or direct prolonged sunlight unless the product listing specifically confirms it is weatherproof.
Age and size matter
Kittens under six months, senior cats, cats recovering from surgery, and cats with mobility conditions may require modified use or supervision for products they would otherwise use freely. Weight limits posted on product listings are hard limits — they are not suggestions.
Inspect before every use
Before your cat uses any product after delivery — and periodically during its life — visually inspect it for fraying cord, splintered wood, cracked plastic, exposed fasteners, worn sisal, or anything your cat could chew and swallow. Retire a piece the moment it cannot be repaired safely.
Keep out of reach of children
Small accessories, replacement litter inserts, catnip products, and electronic components should be stored away from children under 12. Catnip in particular should not be handled by young children without adult supervision.
Supervision during break-in
When introducing any new product to your cat — a cat tree, a fountain, a harness, a carrier — supervise the first several uses completely. Cats explore with their mouths and claws. The break-in period is when the highest number of unexpected interactions occur.
Cat trees, perches, beds, and scratchers.
Our furniture category — Climb, Perch, Sleep, and Scratch — covers freestanding cat trees built from solid oak and ash, wall-mounted climbing systems, ceiling-suspended hammocks, cat beds, and sisal scratching posts. Each subcategory carries its own installation and use requirements.
Weight limits on all climbing furniture are the maximum safe load for a single cat at a time, unless the product page explicitly rates it for two or more cats simultaneously. Exceeding the rated weight — or allowing multiple cats to occupy the same platform at the same time on a piece rated for one — can cause the structure to tip or a platform to fail.
Climb — Cat Trees & Wall Climbing Systems
- Floor surface: Place freestanding cat trees on a firm, flat, non-slip surface. Hardwood, tile, and laminate floors may require a furniture pad or anti-slip mat underneath the base to prevent the piece from shifting during active use. Never place on a rug thick enough to create a rocking effect.
- Wall bracing: Freestanding pieces such as the Willow Nook Oak Cat Tree state a maximum weight that the base alone can support. Pieces exceeding 30 inches in height or with a narrow base footprint are strongly recommended to be tethered to a wall stud using the anti-tip hardware included in the box or sold separately. If anti-tip hardware is not included, standard furniture tipping restraints rated for the piece's weight are available at any hardware store.
- Wall-mounted systems: Catastrophic Creations wall panels, shelves, and hammock systems must be anchored into structural wall studs or using toggle anchors rated for at minimum twice the combined weight of the product plus the cat. Drywall alone cannot safely bear the dynamic load of a leaping cat. Use a stud finder before drilling. Mounting into plaster walls requires specialist fixings — contact a professional if in doubt.
- Platform-to-platform height: Cats that are elderly, arthritic, or recovering from orthopedic surgery may not be able to jump safely between platforms spaced more than 12 inches apart. Consider placing an additional step or ramp between platforms if your cat has limited mobility.
- Ceiling-height hammocks: Double hammock and bridge combo units from Catastrophic Creations span between two wall anchor points. Confirm both anchor points are independently rated to the stated load before suspending a cat. Test the rigging by hand before your cat's first use.
- Sheepskin and wicker materials: Natural sheepskin used in basket liners can shed fibers. Monitor your cat during initial use and remove loose tufts before they can be ingested. If your cat shows any interest in chewing the lining rather than resting in it, remove the liner and contact us.
- Sisal aging: 12mm natural sisal scratching surfaces wear down over time. A heavily used surface will fray. Frayed sisal fibers longer than approximately half an inch should be trimmed with scissors before your cat can pull them free and swallow them. Replace sisal wraps or whole platforms when the sisal pad can no longer grip the substrate beneath it.
Perch — Wall-Mounted Steps & Shelves
- Load rating per perch: Individual wall-mounted cat perches carry a stated per-unit weight limit. Do not place two cats on a single perch simultaneously, and do not exceed the stated limit when adding any accessory pad or cushion weight.
- Mounting height: Perches installed at heights above 60 inches from the floor represent a fall risk for kittens, senior cats, and cats with vestibular disorders. If installing at elevation, ensure there are intermediate steps and a soft landing area beneath the highest point.
- Bracket inspection: Re-torque all mounting screws 30 days after installation and every six months thereafter. Wood screws in plaster or older drywall can loosen with vibration over time. A perch that wobbles even slightly should be remounted before further use.
Sleep & Scratch
- Beds and felt caves: Nooee felt cat caves and teepees are made from compressed wool felt. Wool is generally safe for cats, but if your cat has a known wool sensitivity or atopic dermatitis, introduce any wool-lined product gradually and consult your vet. Do not machine wash unless the care label explicitly permits it — compressed felt can shrink and deform in a way that could trap a cat.
- Cushion infill: Beds and cushions with loose polyfill should be inspected periodically for tears. Polyfill ingested in quantity can cause gastrointestinal obstruction. Replace any bed or cushion with an accessible tear immediately.
- Freestanding scratchers: Place vertical scratchers on a flat surface. A scratcher tall enough for a cat to fully extend on must be heavy enough not to tip when a cat leans its full weight into it. If the piece tips when you push it from the top, add ballast weight to the base or anchor it.
- Wall-panel scratchers (MiaCara Parete): The Parete scratching panel mounts flush to the wall. Follow the wall-anchor guidance above. Confirm that the panel does not flex or pull from the wall under the full force of a cat's scratch before leaving your cat unsupervised with it.
Water fountains, litter systems, and connected tech.
Technology products at The Meow Picks involve electricity, moving mechanical components, and — in the case of fountains — standing water near an electrical circuit. This section requires careful reading before first use.
Never operate any electrical product from The Meow Picks with a damaged, frayed, or pinched power cord. Unplug any electrical product before cleaning, before performing any maintenance, and any time you suspect water has entered the motor housing or control unit. Do not use an extension cord unless it is rated for continuous use at the appliance's wattage.
Water Fountains
- Electrical safety first: Place the fountain on a stable surface that keeps the power cord away from areas where your cat plays or where the cord could be pulled. Never route the cord under a rug, door, or into a high-traffic area. Use a GFCI-protected outlet wherever the fountain is close to a sink, bathtub, or any other water source.
- Fill level: Keep the water at the manufacturer's stated minimum fill level at all times. Running a submersible pump dry — even briefly — can overheat and permanently damage the motor and, in rare cases, create a burn risk. Check the water level daily.
- Filter replacement: Fountain filters are consumable items. A clogged or saturated filter can restrict flow enough to run the pump dry. Replace filters on the schedule the maker recommends — typically every two to four weeks depending on the number of cats using the fountain. Do not substitute non-OEM filters unless they are explicitly certified to be equivalent.
- Cleaning frequency: Disassemble and clean fountain bowls, pump, and tubes at least once per week to prevent biofilm and bacterial growth. Use pet-safe dish soap only and rinse all components thoroughly before reassembly. Never use bleach, alcohol, or other disinfectant chemicals on any surface your cat's mouth will contact unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that cleaning agent.
- Water quality: Use filtered or tap water appropriate for drinking in your municipality. Do not add vitamins, minerals, flavor additives, essential oils, or any supplements to the fountain water unless specifically directed by your vet. Many additives that appear safe for humans are toxic to cats.
- Multiple-cat households: Fountains with a stated capacity for one or two cats should not be the sole water source for three or more cats, as throughput may not meet the combined daily hydration requirement and filter loading will exceed the replacement schedule.
Litter Boxes (Standard and Powered)
- MiaCara Sito — non-powered aluminum litter box: The Sito uses a compostable cardboard insert. This insert is not designed to contain a cat that sprays horizontally. If your cat urinates on vertical surfaces, the Sito's open-top aluminum shell will contain the spray but the cardboard liner will be saturated quickly. Replace the insert every two to five days in this scenario rather than the standard seven to fourteen days, and wipe the aluminum interior with a damp cloth each time.
- Compostable inserts — disposal: Sito's compostable cardboard inserts are certified compostable under ASTM D6400. However, because they contain cat waste, they should not be composted in home systems — cat feces can harbor Toxoplasma gondii, which is not reliably killed in backyard compost heaps at the temperatures they reach. Dispose of spent inserts in your regular household waste stream in your municipality, unless your local authority specifically accepts pet waste in its compost or green-waste program.
- Kittens and standard litter boxes: Do not use any litter box with an entry height greater than three inches for kittens under 12 weeks. Young kittens do not have the leg strength to reliably clear a tall entry lip and may soil the floor or become distressed when they cannot exit.
- Ventilation during cleaning: Cleaning a litter box — even a design-led aluminum one — releases ammonia vapor. Clean in a ventilated room, or briefly open a window, whenever scooping or changing the insert. Chronic exposure to ammonia in an enclosed space is harmful to both cats and people.
GPS Trackers & Other Connected Technology
- Battery safety: If any connected technology product in our range contains a lithium battery, the battery compartment must remain closed and secured at all times during use. Do not allow your cat to chew on any device. Lithium battery ingestion is a veterinary emergency requiring immediate intervention.
- GPS tracker weight and fit: A GPS tracker should never exceed five percent of the cat's body weight when attached. A 10 lb cat should not carry a tracker weighing more than 8 grams. Check that the attachment clip or collar ring does not create a pressure point at the neck or shoulder.
- Not a substitute for enclosure: GPS tracking technology does not prevent a cat from being injured outdoors. A tracker tells you where your cat is; it does not protect them from traffic, predators, or toxic plants. Outdoor-access decisions remain your judgment as the owner.
Bowls, feeders, and food-contact surfaces.
Bowls and feeders sold by The Meow Picks are made from food-grade materials. The guidance here applies to all feeding products, including the MiaCara Desco feeder, Scodella ceramic bowls, Fable bowl mats, and any future additions in the Eat category.
- Food-grade materials: All bowls and feeders in this store are made from food-safe stainless steel, food-grade ceramic, or food-safe powder-coated steel, as stated on the individual product page. Do not use these products to serve food that has been prepared with ingredients known to be toxic to cats, including onion, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, grapes, raisins, alcohol, and caffeine.
- Ceramic bowls — chip inspection: The MiaCara Scodella and similar ceramic bowls should be inspected before each use for chips or cracks. A chipped rim can cut a cat's lips or tongue. A hairline crack in a ceramic bowl can harbor bacteria and is not reliably cleaned by washing. Replace a chipped or cracked ceramic bowl immediately.
- Powder-coated steel feeders: The MiaCara Desco feeder has a powder-coated steel body. Inspect the coating periodically for chips that expose bare steel. Rusted or deeply chipped powder-coat should not be in contact with your cat's food or water. If the coating is compromised, contact us for a resolution before continued use.
- Washing frequency: Food bowls should be washed in hot water with pet-safe dish soap after every single meal. Standing wet food promotes bacterial growth rapidly at room temperature — do not leave wet food in a bowl for more than two hours. Water bowls should be emptied, rinsed, and refilled daily.
- Bowl mats — Fable Signature: The Fable Signature Bowl Mat sits under food and water bowls to catch spills. It is not a food-contact surface itself. Wipe it clean after each feeding and replace it when the silicone surface shows signs of cracking or degradation that could harbor bacteria.
- Dishwasher safety: Only place bowls and feeders in the dishwasher if the product page explicitly states dishwasher safe. Ceramic bowls with hand-painted glazes and powder-coated components are typically hand-wash only. High heat from a dishwasher can degrade coatings and crack glazes over time even when the product appears undamaged.
- Feline whisker fatigue: Cats can experience whisker sensitivity when eating from bowls with steep sides that force their whiskers to repeatedly contact the edges. If your cat backs away from a bowl mid-meal or paws food out, consider switching to a shallower, wider bowl. The Scodella's wide and shallow design is intentionally suited to cats sensitive to whisker contact.
Cat litter — safe use, human and feline.
The Meow Picks currently carries PurrFriendlyLitter Cassava and Corn Clumping Cat Litter. The guidance below applies to this product and to all natural clumping litters we may add in the future.
Do not use clumping litter of any kind with kittens under 8 weeks of age. Very young kittens explore their environment orally. Ingested clumping litter — even natural, plant-based clumping litter — can expand in the gastrointestinal tract and cause obstruction. For kittens under eight weeks, use non-clumping, non-scented litter until they have outgrown the exploratory-mouthing stage.
- PurrFriendlyLitter composition: This litter is made from cassava (tapioca) and corn, which are plant-based, biodegradable, and free from synthetic crystalline silica. It does not carry the inhalation risks associated with traditional silica-dust or clay-based litters. It is not edible, however, and should not be intentionally consumed by cats or humans.
- Dust inhalation: While lower in dust than traditional bentonite litters, natural plant litters still produce some dust during pouring and scooping. If you or any member of your household has asthma, respiratory sensitivity, or a known corn or cassava allergy, wear a dust mask when changing or scooping the litter. Similarly, cats with chronic respiratory conditions (such as feline asthma) should be given space to exit the room while the litter is being changed and allowed to return only after dust has settled.
- Corn allergy in cats: Corn is an uncommon but documented feline allergen. If your cat develops skin irritation, watery eyes, or excessive scratching after transitioning to this litter, discontinue use and consult your vet. Switching litters gradually over seven to ten days can also help a sensitive cat acclimate without respiratory or skin reactions.
- Human handling — pregnancy: Pregnant women should not change cat litter of any type unless wearing gloves and a mask, due to the risk of Toxoplasma gondii transmission from cat feces regardless of the litter material used. This is a general medical recommendation independent of the litter brand or composition.
- Storage: Store unused litter in a sealed container or its original closed bag in a cool, dry location away from humidity. Moisture can cause clumping prematurely in the bag and may promote mold growth in plant-based litters left open for extended periods.
- Disposal: Do not flush PurrFriendlyLitter or any clumping cat litter down a toilet. Natural clumping agents expand with water and can block residential plumbing and are not compatible with municipal sewage treatment for pathogen control. Dispose of scooped clumps in sealed plastic bags in your regular household waste.
Enrichment toys and play accessories.
Do not leave your cat unsupervised with any toy that contains a string, ribbon, feather attachment, or small detachable component. String, ribbon, and tinsel are among the most common causes of gastrointestinal linear foreign body injuries in cats — a condition that requires emergency surgery. All interactive wand and teaser toys should be stored out of your cat's reach after each play session.
- Catnip products — Catastrophic Creations Catnip Spray: The catnip spray sold here contains natural catnip extract in a water-based carrier. Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is non-toxic and non-addictive for cats, and approximately 50-70% of cats respond to it due to a genetic predisposition. However, do not spray catnip products directly on your cat's face, near their eyes, or near open food or water. Apply to a toy or scratching surface instead and let your cat engage at their own pace.
- Catnip and kittens: Kittens under six months do not reliably respond to catnip. Their neurological receptors for nepetalactone (the active compound) are not yet fully developed. Catnip is not harmful to kittens, but the response they exhibit may be unfamiliar to owners accustomed to adult cat behavior. Never allow a kitten to consume a large quantity of catnip material in one session.
- Wall-mounted play systems (Catastrophic Creations): The Play, The Juggernaut, and similar wall-mount cat play systems attach to the wall following the anchor guidance already described in the Furniture section. In addition to the structural requirement, confirm that there are no exposed screw tips or sharp hardware edges accessible to your cat after mounting. Run your hand over all surfaces before your cat's first use.
- Sheepskin toys: Some furniture bundles include a sheepskin fluff-ball or Rodney rat toy. Monitor your cat during initial play for any attempt to separate and swallow sheepskin fibers. If your cat is an aggressive chewer who destroys soft toys quickly, remove any fiber-based attachment and substitute a more durable toy alternative.
- Toy retirement: Any toy that has been chewed to the point that the filling is exposed, the outer material is torn open, or any hard component is cracked should be retired and replaced immediately. A cracked plastic toy can produce sharp shards. An open soft toy exposes polyfill or catnip filling that can cause gastrointestinal issues if ingested in quantity.
Carriers, backpacks, and car seats.
Travel products from The Meow Picks include the MiaCara Zaino cat backpack, the Nooee Lola cat car seat, and any additional travel carriers we list. These products carry safety requirements beyond standard home use.
Never leave your cat unattended inside any carrier, backpack, or car seat in a parked vehicle. Interior vehicle temperatures in direct sunlight can reach life-threatening levels within minutes regardless of outdoor temperature. Heatstroke in cats is a veterinary emergency with rapid onset and a high fatality rate.
- MiaCara Zaino cat backpack — ventilation: The Zaino features a mesh ventilation panel and a bubble window. Ensure the mesh panel remains unobstructed at all times while a cat is inside. Do not press the backpack against your body in a way that covers the ventilation panel during transit. Monitor your cat's breathing rate visually through the bubble window during any journey lasting more than 15 minutes.
- Backpack weight limit: The Zaino has a stated maximum weight limit. Weigh your cat before purchase. Do not use this carrier with a cat that exceeds the limit — the stress on the shoulder straps and the structural integrity of the carrier is not rated for higher loads, and the cat's comfort and safety cannot be guaranteed beyond the specified weight.
- Duration of use: No cat should remain in a closed backpack, carrier, or car seat for more than four hours without a supervised break in a safe, enclosed space. Cats need access to water, a litter opportunity, and the chance to reorient after a period of confinement. For longer journeys, plan stops accordingly.
- Nooee Lola cat car seat — restraint: The Lola car seat is secured to a vehicle seat using a safety belt. Always pass the vehicle seat belt through the car seat's designated belt path before each journey. A cat car seat that is not anchored to the vehicle by a seat belt provides no meaningful protection in a collision and can become a projectile. Never allow a cat to ride unrestrained in a moving vehicle, whether in or outside a carrier.
- Airline travel: The Meow Picks does not guarantee that any carrier sold in this store meets the current cabin or cargo pet policies of any specific airline. Airline requirements for carrier dimensions, ventilation, and materials change frequently. Always check directly with your airline and cross-reference their published pet policy against the carrier's stated dimensions before booking travel. The Zaino's dimensions are listed on the product page for this purpose.
- Acclimatization: A cat that has never been in a carrier will experience significant stress the first time it is confined in one for travel. Leave the carrier open in your home for at least one to two weeks before any planned journey, placing familiar bedding and occasional treats inside, so the cat associates the carrier with safety rather than only with stressful events like vet visits.
Harnesses and wearable accessories.
The MiaCara Modena Cat Harness and any wearable accessories in the Wear category require specific fitting and supervised use guidance.
Never leave a harness on an unattended cat for extended periods. A cat in a harness that catches on furniture, a fence, or a branch can become strangled. Harnesses are for supervised, active-leash use only. Remove the harness when your cat returns indoors and is no longer under direct watch.
- Fit — the two-finger rule: A correctly fitted cat harness should allow you to slide two fingers — and only two — comfortably under any strap at any point around the body. A harness that is too loose allows the cat to back out of it by turning their head down and walking backward, which is a common and effective cat escape technique. A harness that is too tight restricts breathing, blood flow, and movement, and causes distress.
- Sizing — measure before ordering: The MiaCara Modena is available in multiple sizes. Measure your cat's chest girth (the widest point behind the front legs) and neck circumference before selecting a size. Do not size up assuming the cat will grow into it — an oversized harness on a small cat is a safety hazard.
- Leash attachment point: Attach the leash to the dedicated D-ring on the harness back, never to the neck loop. Pulling a cat's weight through a neck attachment causes cervical spine strain and tracheal injury.
- Not suitable for all cats: Cats that are recovering from thoracic or abdominal surgery, or that have been diagnosed with a respiratory condition, cardiac condition, or orthopaedic injury affecting the front limbs or shoulder girdle, should not use a harness without explicit veterinary clearance first.
- Material inspection: Check all buckles, stitching, and adjustment sliders on a harness before each use. A buckle that fails under tension in an outdoor environment means the cat is no longer restrained. If any hardware shows cracking, deformation, or stitching is pulling free, retire the harness.
- First use outdoors: A cat wearing a harness outdoors for the first time should be in a completely enclosed, familiar, and low-traffic space. Never take an unharnessed-trained cat outdoors on a leash in a public or high-stimulus environment on the first attempt — the startle reflex in an unfamiliar outdoor setting can cause the cat to attempt to escape the harness with great force.
What our products are made from.
The materials used in every product are disclosed on the individual product page. This section provides general allergen and material safety context relevant to the categories we carry.
California Prop 65 Notice: Some wood products, coatings, and plastics — including products imported from Europe — may contain trace levels of chemicals listed under California's Proposition 65, including DEHP and lead compounds, at levels below detectable harm thresholds. The Meow Picks does not independently test for Prop 65 chemicals beyond what makers declare. If you are a California resident with a concern about a specific material, contact us at josh@themeowpicks.com before purchase and we will provide the maker's available documentation.
Before your cat touches anything.
A product that is assembled incorrectly is not safe regardless of how well it is designed. This section covers the non-negotiable steps that apply to every product requiring assembly or installation.
Read all instructions first
Before touching a single fastener, read the entire assembly guide supplied by the maker. Do not begin assembly mid-page and do not skip the torque specifications or anchor requirements — those are the numbers that matter for safety.
Verify the hardware count
Lay all supplied hardware out and compare against the parts list before beginning. If anything is missing, contact us at josh@themeowpicks.com before proceeding. Do not substitute hardware from a hardware store — maker-supplied fasteners are sized and rated for the specific joint they secure.
Wall anchors — studs or rated toggles only
Any wall-mounted product must anchor into a structural stud or a toggle anchor rated for at minimum twice the stated product load plus the cat's weight, to account for dynamic jumping force. Standard drywall anchors rated for static loads are not appropriate for products a cat leaps on.
Test before first use
After assembly, load-test every piece before your cat's first use by applying your body weight progressively — or the highest load you expect the cat to place on it — to every platform, shelf, and anchor point. A safe assembly holds under this test without creak, flex, or wall movement.
If you are not confident about drilling into your walls or reading a load rating — hire a professional. A handyperson, carpenter, or licensed contractor can install a wall-mounted cat furniture system safely in under an hour. The cost of a professional installation is far less than the cost of an emergency vet visit from a fall. Powered products — full requirements.
This section applies to all products powered by a wall outlet or USB adapter, including water fountains, any powered litter systems we carry, and any other electronic products listed in the Technology category.
UL-listed adapters only
Use only the power adapter supplied by the maker, or a UL-listed replacement with identical voltage, amperage, and connector specifications. Third-party adapters that are not independently tested and listed are a fire and electrical shock risk.
GFCI outlet strongly recommended
Any electrical product used in proximity to water — specifically water fountains — should be plugged into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. These outlets are required by the National Electrical Code in bathrooms and kitchens in new construction. If your outlet is not GFCI-protected, a GFCI plug adapter is available at any hardware store for under $15.
Cord management
Cats will chew power cords given the opportunity. Route all cords through cable conduit, behind furniture, or use a cord-protection sleeve. A cat chewing through a live 120V AC cord is a life-threatening electrocution and fire risk. Never run a cord across a floor where a cat regularly plays or walks.
Do not modify any product
Do not open, modify, repair, or replace any component inside an electrical product unless the maker's guide explicitly describes a user-serviceable procedure. Unauthorized disassembly voids any applicable warranty and creates a shock hazard. If a product malfunctions, unplug it and contact us.
Unplug before any water contact
Unplug a fountain, powered litter system, or any other electrical product from the wall outlet before cleaning it, refilling it, or disassembling it for maintenance — even if the product appears to have a physical power switch. Switches do not eliminate the live connection at the power cord. Always unplug from the wall first.
Overheating and unusual noise

No pet safety page can cover every scenario. The following is a list of specific situations connected to the use of products from The Meow Picks that should prompt an immediate or same-day veterinary call.
Foreign body ingestion
If you witness or suspect your cat has swallowed any part of a product — sisal fiber, sheepskin tuft, polyfill, wicker strand, plastic component, or a segment of cord — contact your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency animal hospital immediately. Do not wait for symptoms. The ASPCA Poison Control line is +1 888-426-4435.
Fall from height
A fall from a wall perch, cat tree, or suspended hammock — even if the cat appears to land correctly — should be evaluated by a vet within 24 hours if you observe any of the following: limping, reluctance to bear weight on a limb, changes in breathing, blood from any orifice, loss of appetite, or uncharacteristic hiding or aggression.
Contact reaction
Redness, swelling, hair loss, or persistent scratching localized to the area of contact with a new material (a harness strap, a sheepskin liner, a felt cave) warrants a veterinary evaluation for a contact allergy or dermatitis. Discontinue use of the product and bring it to the appointment so the vet can identify the specific material.
Respiratory changes near litter
If your cat develops coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing that appears connected to litter box use — particularly after switching to a new litter — consult your vet. Feline asthma can be triggered or worsened by litter dust even from low-dust formulas, and it is a manageable but serious condition that requires diagnosis.
Dehydration despite fountain access
If your cat is not drinking from the fountain despite it functioning correctly, shows signs of lethargy, dry gums, or reduced litter box output, contact your vet. Reduced drinking in a cat can indicate a range of conditions from dental pain to kidney disease, none of which a product change will resolve.
Harness or carrier distress
A cat showing open-mouth breathing, loud persistent vocalization, excessive drooling, or collapse after or during use of a harness or carrier is showing signs of heat stress or acute anxiety that require immediate veterinary assessment. Do not continue the journey — stop, remove the cat from the carrier or harness in a safe enclosed location, offer water, and seek emergency veterinary care.

Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA)
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has authority over general consumer products, including pet furniture and accessories. Products sold through The Meow Picks are sourced from makers whose items are designed and sold for consumer use. We monitor CPSC recall databases and will notify customers and update our listings promptly if any product we carry is subject to a recall. Customers can check current recalls at cpsc.gov/recalls.
Truth in Advertising & Product Claims
All product descriptions, safety claims, and maker attributions on this site accurately represent the products as we have received and evaluated them. We do not make health or therapeutic claims for any product sold on this site. Material descriptions (solid oak, authentic sheepskin, food-grade aluminum) are verified against the maker's own technical documentation prior to listing.
Toy and Play Product Safety Standards
Cat toys and enrichment accessories in our Play category are sourced from makers in the United States and Europe. European-made play products (including those from MiaCara and Catastrophic Creations) may carry CE marking under EN 71 or equivalent standards. We require maker documentation on toy safety upon listing. ASTM F963, the U.S. Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety, informs our material safety review process for any toy product carried.
Lead in Surface Coatings
The CPSC limits lead in surface coatings on consumer products to no more than 90 ppm. Coated products we carry — including powder-coated steel feeders, painted furniture components, and ceramic glazes — are sourced from makers who represent compliance with this standard. Documentation is available upon written request.
Proposition 65 (California)
California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide reasonable warnings before knowingly and intentionally exposing individuals to listed chemicals. Where a maker has provided Prop 65 documentation for a product, this information is available in the product listing or upon direct request. California residents with specific concerns about a product's compliance status are encouraged to contact us before purchase.
Electrical Product Safety
Electrical products — including water fountains and any powered litter technology — are sourced from makers who supply UL, CE, or equivalent third-party electrical safety certification documentation. We do not list electrical products that lack documentation of independent electrical safety testing. Copies of applicable certifications are available upon request at josh@themeowpicks.com.
Product Recall Obligations
Under Section 15(b) of the CPSA, retailers and distributors have a mandatory obligation to report to the CPSC any products that could contain a defect or present a substantial product hazard. The Meow Picks takes this obligation seriously. If we become aware that any product we sell poses an identified safety risk, we will cease selling it immediately, communicate to all affected customers by email, and cooperate fully with any CPSC investigation or recall action.
Environmental Marketing Claims
The FTC's Green Guides govern the accuracy of environmental and ecological marketing claims. Where products on this site are described as "compostable," "biodegradable," "recycled," or "natural," those descriptions are used only when the maker has provided third-party certification or substantiation — such as ASTM D6400 for the Sito's compostable insert — consistent with the FTC's qualification requirements.
